World Cup Day 2 highlights: Late winners, later heartbreak and now Ronaldo

0

Here is everything you need to know to enjoy Friday at the World Cup.

Ready, set, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!

Keep your most wooden spoons close. The first full day of action at the 2018 World Cup in Russia kicked off with a group stage matchup between Egypt and Uruguay that was billed as a clash between two of the most dynamic attackers in the world: Mo Salah and Luis Suarez. Alas, Salah remained on the bench and Suarez made the least of some scoring opportunities before teammate Jose Gimenez bailed him out with a last-gasp winner. After that, Iran got a late winner itself by way of a heartbreaking Morocco own goal. The trio of games concludes with as high-profile a clash as we’re going to see in the group stage: Spain vs. Portugal. It quickly became a battle of wills and goals between Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa.

Please stay tuned as the day rolls on for the final scores and must-see highlights.

World Cup scores and schedule For Match Day 2

Uruguay 1-0 Egypt (Jose Gimenez 89’)

Morocco 0-1 Iran (Aziz Bouhaddouz O.G. 90’+5)

Half-time score: Portugal 2-1 Spain (TV: FOX and Telemundo; Livestream, Fox Sports Go, Telemundo Deportes en vivo)

World Cup goals and highlights from Day 2

Here are all the goals and top moments from Friday at the World Cup.

RONALDO SCORED A PENALTY, LIKE RIGHT AWAY

  • In just the fourth minute, Ronaldo earned a penalty kick. He stepped to the spot and gave Portugal an early 1-0 lead over Spain.

Then Diego Costa equalized for SPAIN!

But Ronaldo pushed another goal past De Gea

So Costa responded with another goal!

Nacho broke the tie with a screamer of a goal!

Jose Gimenez scored Uruguay’s winning goal late!

Uruguay emerged with a nervy 1-0 victory over the Salah-less Egypt thanks to an 89th-minute goal from Jose Gimenez.

A Morocco own goal wins it for Iran even later!

Despite Morocco appearing the stronger side for large stretches, Iran stole a win when Morocco’s Aziz Bouhaddouz scored a heartbreaking own goal in stoppage time.

Before that, chances came ... and went unfinished.

We’re still waiting for Mo Salah’s magic...

  • Salah, who suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Liverpool in the Champions League final, spent Egypt’s opening game on the bench. Egypt coach Héctor Cúper had previously said “I can almost assure you 100 percent he will play,” but the star was held out against Uruguay.

To understand why this was such a bummer, let’s get caught up on the rise of the “Egyptian King.”

Luis Suarez had a rough game but not THAT rough.

  • In Uruguay’s opener against Egypt, Suarez squandered some chances, but avoided disaster or disgrace.

You may remember Luis Suarez from such World Cup scandals as Wait, did that dude just bite that other guy? and Oh, that’s def a red card but also kinda smart. Of course, you could also know the Uruguay star as an integral attacker at Barcelona, where he has recorded 152 goals and 84 assists in 198 appearances.

Prepare for Ronaldo’s abs.

  • As long as Cristiano Ronaldo has a Portugal shirt on, he is a danger to opponents. Lose track of him even for a moment, and he decides the game. By the time Ronaldo has that Portugal pulled off, it’s too late. He’s celebrating a goal. And while you’re busy tabulating his abdominal muscles, he’s likely to go nab another.
