'They need him': Carragher stunned by remarkable comeback of Man United hero after Brentford win
Manchester United beat Brentford in the Premier League on Monday to edge closer to the UEFA Champions League return.
First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko provided a solid foundation for the hosts.
Brentford earned a consolation goal but it was too late to mount a comeback.
Casemiro, Senne Lammens and Kobbie Mainoo were the clear standouts as they delivered excellent performances against the Bees.
Harry Maguire also put on a solid show at the back on his return to the starting XI after serving a two-game ban.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher paid tribute to Maguire after the victory against Brentford.
He said (via Sky Sports): “He is a top player. You see that with what he’s done with England and getting the armband at Manchester United. Then he’s had a difficult spell as you do as a footballer. He’s a top character. It would’ve been very easy to leave United when the supporters were getting on his back.
“When it doesn’t go well the flak is flying, I know that from being at Liverpool – it’s exactly the same at Man Utd. They need Harry Maguire now. I love that in players. I’ve got a lot of admiration for him.
“Have a look at players when things aren’t going well, how they fight, that’s part of being a professional. He’s a superb character.”
Harry Maguire will be remembered fondly
The 33-year-old claimed an assist for the opening goal against Brentford.
Fernandes found him with a loopy corner kick at the far post.
Maguire was too far from goal to beat the goalkeeper so he intelligently nodded the ball across goal where Casemiro was waiting to break the deadlock.
Just moments earlier, Maguire had come agonisingly close to getting on the scoresheet himself.
His bullet header was brilliantly saved by the Brentford goalkeeper.
Maguire was brutally trolled for close to two years by pundits. The rise of social media did not help his cause.
His performances dipped, and he was stripped of the captaincy by former manager Erik ten Hag.
Nine out of 10 players would have chosen to leave the club out of embarrassment.
Maguire came close to joining West Ham United but ultimately stayed at Old Trafford.
He has not looked back since, delivering crucial performances for both club and country.
Carragher is often quick to criticise United, but even he was forced to tip his hat to Maguire.
That says everything about how far the former United captain has come in winning over not only the supporters but also his critics.
