Celtic are facing a period of uncertainty regarding the future of Maik Nawrocki, with Hannover only able to afford a permanent deal for the defender if the club secure promotion to the Bundesliga.
The 25-year-old joined the German outfit on loan from the Glasgow giants last summer and has recently established himself as a regular fixture in the side.
The Glasgow club paid a fee of over €5m to sign the centre-back from Legia Warsaw in 2023, but the player struggled to maintain a consistent place in the starting line-up at Celtic Park before his move to Germany.
He has seen injuries interrupt his time at Hannover so far, managing just 14 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, but the German club could still look to keep him.
To afford the over €2m option to buy clause though, Hannover would likely need to win promotion to the Bundesliga, according to German daily Bild.
The club currently occupy fifth position in the 2. Bundesliga table with 50 points from 28 league fixtures, sitting four points adrift of an automatic promotion place with six matches remaining.
Hannover could still win promotion through the relegation/promotion playoff spot and they are two points behind Elversberg, who occupy it in third.
Nawrocki has established himself in the heart of defence in recent games, clocking the full 90 minutes in Hannover’s last five 2. Bundesliga games.
The former Legia Warsaw defender has been coy on what the future may hold and insists there are several options on his table.
Nawrocki was quoted as saying: “Staying here, going back to Celtic or maybe go somewhere else entirely, there are several options for now.”
Celtic will likely be monitoring the situation closely as the board look to recoup a significant portion of the transfer fee they invested in the Pole two years ago.
Nawrocki would likely be up against it in terms of securing game time if he did head back to Celtic.
If the German side do not achieve their promotion goal then it remains to be seen if they might try to negotiate a lower price with Celtic of seek to strike a fresh loan agreement.
With the season reaching its business end, Celtic remain in a state of limbo as they wait to see if the Lower Saxons can secure the top-flight status necessary to finalise the transfer on the already agreed terms.
