Two Man Utd academy stars poised for pre-season opportunity after Casemiro exit
Manchester United are staring at a major midfield dilemma ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Casemiro is set to head for the Old Trafford exit door after his contract expires at the end of June.
Manuel Ugarte could also depart after struggling to adapt to the intensity and demands of the Premier League.
It will be a busy summer for several players with the World Cup scheduled in June and July. The final of the tournament is set for July 19.
The Red Devils are set to kick off their pre-season on July 18 against Wrexham in Helsinki.
Bruno Fernandes will surely represent Portugal on the global stage and may not be available for the opening pre-season clash.
England manager Thomas Tuchel selected Kobbie Mainoo for the friendly games in March. The 20-year-old now has a chance to be part of the Three Lions’ squad for the tournament.
This will leave United effectively without senior midfielders.
This will also pave the way for two highly promising academy talents to make a strong case for first-team involvement.
Big opportunity for Fletcher and Moorhouse
Jack Fletcher already made his debut earlier this campaign. His performances were far from impressive but he continues to excel at the Under-21 level.
He delivered a standout performance against Leeds United U21s, scoring a decisive brace to secure a crucial 2-1 victory on Friday.
Operating as an attacking midfielder, Fletcher fired a curling delivery that evaded everyone in the box and caught the goalkeeper off guard.
While the first goal had an element of fortune, his second strike was a clear demonstration of composure and technique.
The move began with Jack Moorhouse, who surged forward with intent before threading a perfectly weighted pass into Fletcher’s path. The 19-year-old controlled the ball with his left foot before smashing it past the goalkeeper.
Moorhouse is known for his superb ball-carrying ability, regularly gliding past opponents to break defensive lines.
If he can sharpen his distribution and add more physical robustness to his game, there is every chance he could catch the eye of Michael Carrick, or any United manager, during pre-season.
Both youngsters will have the perfect stage to prove they belong at the highest level.
