Heartbreak for Manchester United Women as Bayern Munich fight back to end European dream
Manchester United Women lost 2-1 at Bayern Munich in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday evening.
Marc Skinner’s side have now been knocked out of the competition, having lost 5-3 on aggregate.
United started well, with Melvine Malard drawing a good save from Ena Mahmutovic early on.
Malard put United ahead in the 11th minute, tapping the ball into an empty net after the ball fell kindly to her, levelling the tie.
United continued their bright start with Malard and Jess Park forcing Mahmutovic into further saves.
Bayern almost found the leveller before halftime when Vanessa Gilles’ flick appeared to be falling to Pernille Harder, but Malard averted the danger.
The hosts came out flying from the blocks after the break, with Harder calling Phallon Tullis-Joyce into action. The American stuck out her leg to deny the Bayern forward.
Bayern continued to crank up the pressure to regain control of the tie but United defended doggedly to keep the scoreline level.
They finally got the breakthrough when captain Glodos Viggosdottir rose highest to head Giulia Gwinn’s corner into the net, giving the German side a 4-3 lead on aggregate.
Linda Dallmann sealed the victory for Bayern with a brilliant strike into the top corner, sending them to the semi-final and ending United’s journey in the competition.
United are not in action until April 26 when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League.
