Roberto De Zerbi has already made a decision on Tottenham relegation, journalist reveals

0 4

Journalist Julien Laurens has revealed whether Roberto De Zerbi is prepared to remain in charge of Tottenham Hotspur in the Championship if the club fail to stay up this season.

The 3-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Igor Tudor, who leaves Spurs on the brink of relegation disaster with seven games left to go.

De Zerbi is expected to be announced as the next Tottenham boss, with the Italian entrusted with the huge challenge of swiftly turning around the fortunes of a team which has not won a single league match in 2026.

Some have raised question marks about whether the Italian is the right fit for Spurs right now, and it has now been revealed what he plans on doing if things do not go according to plan in the final seven games of the season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham contract has a relegation break clause

According to reports, De Zerbi is set to be handed a five-year contract by Tottenham, which suggests that the club see the Italian as a man to build a lasting project at Hotspur Way.

However, Julien Laurens has now revealed that the 46-year-old has no intention of continuing on as Spurs head coach if he is not able to keep the club in the Premier League.

The journalist said on BBC Sport’s Monday Night Club about De Zerbi: “He’s not a Championship manager. There is no doubt in my mind, and I was told that again earlier, that there will be a clause for him to walk away.

“There’s a break clause obviously if they do go down from the club’s point of view, but he would not stay in the Championship if they were to go down. He would certainly feel that he failed if he didn’t keep them up.”

Julien Laurens claims De Zerbi will have misgivings about Spurs’ squad

Laurens revealed that the former Brighton boss sees great potential to build something at Tottenham if they were to remain in the top-flight.

However, the French journalist warned the Lilywhites that they would need to make wholesale changes to their squad in the summer to implement the Italian’s style of football.

Laurens added about De Zerbi: “If he keeps them up, then he stays there. I think he sees the great potential of the club. But they will have a massive rebuild to do, because there are not many players in that current squad that fit for him and his philosophy.”
