Shock U-turn: Man United set to ditch 25yo 'priority target' after one year

Manchester United are casting their net wide in search of elite midfield reinforcements ahead of a defining summer window.

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali continues to be strongly linked with a high-profile move to Old Trafford.

According to The Athletic, United sources have played down the prospect of a move for Tonali in the upcoming transfer window.

He was their “priority target” last summer but they are considering other options due to the overall cost.

Enzo Fernandez, Declan Rice and Moise Caicedo fetched fees around the £100 million mark.

The Magpies are expected to demand a similar fee to sanction Tonali’s exit, as he remains under contract until 2029 with an option for the deal to roll over for another year.

United should focus on other targets

The Red Devils are poised to strengthen their financial position through potential UEFA Champions League qualification and the possible sales of players like Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana.

Casemiro is set to depart after his contract expires at the end of June, freeing up significant wages.

They also have a committed facility which they can use to draw funds.

It is increasingly likely that United will invest close to £100 million in one marquee midfielder but that player should be Elliot Anderson rather than Tonali.

The 25-year-old would add energy, intensity, and relentless work rate to United’s midfield engine room.

He is also a superb ball-carrier but lacks the goal-scoring output United need from a potential Casemiro replacement.

Another lingering concern is the shadow of his previous betting-related controversy, which continues to follow him.

At a club like United, where scrutiny is relentless, investing such a significant fee in a player with potential off-field distractions could be a big risk.
