Hearts 1 Hibs Women 2
It was Derby Day delight for the Hibees as we secured a terrific late Edinburgh Derby victory over Hearts at Oriam!
A first Hibs goal for Jess Fitzgerald pushed the Hibees ahead before Hearts pulled one back through Georgia Timms. Not for the first time, however, as time wound down, Rosie Livingstone delivered a stellar late strike to settle the derby; securing the victory and sealing three crucial points.
Three changes were made to Joelle Murray’s starting XI that drew with Rangers in midweek. Siobhan Hunter wore captain's armband for the match as she filled in for Linzi Taylor. Meanwhile, Hannah Jordan and Tegan Bowie replaced Eilidh Adams and Tiree Burchill.
Hearts had the first opportunity of the game as Georgia Timms took an ambitious shot on goal in the middle of the box, however, her shot went wide.
Significantly for the injury-struck Hibees, inside the opening quarter, Kathleen McGovern was forced off the field after sustaining an injury, with Burchill replacing our number 10.
In the 21st minute, Carly Johns charged down the middle of the field opening up another chance for the home team, but Lauren Doran-Barr was quick on her feet to eliminate the threat.
We came close to opening the scoring as Burchill bypassed through the Hearts midfield before passing to Jordan. The attacker took on a powerful strike but was unable to hit the net as Rachael Johnstone saved the chance well.
The Hibees came out at the start of the second-half in dominant fashion, breaking the deadlock in the 48th minute after a quick succession of chances ensued.
Ciara Grant took a corner-kick which found Burchill's feet, the forward took aim but the ball deflected into the path of Fitzgerald, who swiped at the ball and effortlessly thumped it into the back of the net via the post.
The fine finish marked the Irish midfielder’s first goal for Hibernian.
Hearts attempted to retaliate moments later, as Johns had open space at the top-end of the pitch and took the opportunity to strike, but the ball clipped the woodwork.
In the 57th minute, Livingstone came close to sealing Hibernian’s second after her half-volley attempt was saved well by Johnstone.
Noa Schumacher made a pivotal save on 62 minutes after Jenna Slattery attempted to level the field, saving low to keep out the attacker's grounded effort.
However, her save couldn’t be replicated moments later after Timms calmly slotted the ball into the net to level the match.
Both teams would apply pressure in the final stages, but it was Hibs who would prevail in the final minute of the 90.
Youngster Jess Ramsay delivered a promising ball to Livingstone up the line, allowing the forward to drive forward to find an open space to take a shot.
From 25 yards, she whipped the ball across goal into the top-left corner, giving Johnstone no chance and sparking brilliant scenes between the players and supporters inside the ground.
