Archie Gray reveals how he turned Tottenham misfortunes into something positive
Archie Gray has revealed the one factor which has aided his development the most since he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur nearly two years ago.
Gray arrived from Leeds as a teenager in 2024 with a big reputation, and while his talent was immediately visible when he stepped out on the pitch last season, he was still very raw.
Fast forward around 20 months, and the youngster now looks completely at ease with the pressures of playing at the highest levels and is starting to dominate in the middle of the park.
Gray delivered a coming-of-age performance against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, not only covering immense ground and being first to most loose balls, but also showing tremendous composure and quality in possession.
Archie Gray admits playing several positions at Tottenham has helped his development
The youngster has played as a centre-back, both full-back roles, as a wing-back and a couple of different midfield roles since arriving at N17.
While some Spurs fans wanted to see Gray get a run in his favoured midfield role, as he is doing now, the 20-year-old admitted that learning those different roles has helped him see situations on the pitch differently.
Ahead of Tottenham’s second leg against Atletico, the midfielder told the Spurs matchday programme: “Having so many injuries and me having to play in different positions has seen me learn different things every single game. I’ve always enjoyed trying and learning new things both in football and off the pitch too, which I see as an important thing in life.
“By playing in different positions in football, I can understand different perspectives of the game, and ultimately, it’s just adding another tool to my toolbox. That’s the way I see it. In the academy at Leeds, they always made us swap positions.
“I have been doing it from a young age and have built a base which has made it easier for me. It allows me not to think too much about it and just take on advice from the coaching staff.”
Gray wants to do ‘little bit extra’ to help Spurs get out of this mess
The former Leeds man acknowledged that Tottenham should not be in the position they currently find themselves in, but admitted that it is up to the players to show their quality on the pitch.
Gray revealed that he is trying hard to give a little bit extra to help the team get out of their current predicament, and has challenged his teammates to all deliver an extra 10 per cent.
When asked about Tottenham’s current state, he said: “It’s especially difficult now because we shouldn’t be in this situation, but we’ve got to show that on the pitch. I always go into every game with the same attitude that I was taught at Leeds, and in a difficult situation like the one that we are in at the moment, I’ve been trying as hard as I can to do that little bit extra.
“I want to help my teammates out and will do that in every single game. If we can all do that and try to help each other out, it will help us add that extra 10 per cent, which could end up being massive. I think you find out a little bit about yourself in a situation like this. We’ve just got to keep pushing every single day and believe in each other.”
