Man Utd in advanced talks to sign 'very special' star as Casemiro replacement - report
Manchester United are expected to bolster their midfield when the transfer window reopens this summer.
United have been linked with several targets, including Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes.
With Newcastle unlikely to qualify for the Champions League, the Brazilian could be open to leaving the Magpies.
Reuters now report that the Red Devils are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Guimaraes for €80 million. He is viewed as a replacement for the departing Casemiro.
Casemiro has recommended Guimaraes to United, ‘citing his experience and leadership’.
United face competition from Real Madrid for his signature. The Spanish side have been his long-term admirer, with manager Carlo Ancelotti recommending his signature three years ago.
Ancelotti, who is now Guimaraes’ head coach at the Brazil national team, reportedly still wants him to join Madrid and has told President Florentino Perez that he would be an ideal signing.
Described as a ‘very special‘ player by manager Eddie Howe, the 28-year-old is now expected to make a decision on his future next summer.
Guimaraes would not be Casemiro’s ideal replacement
Guimaraes is enjoying another stellar season for Newcastle. He has registered 15 goal involvements across all competitions.
However, United need to look elsewhere for a replacement for Casemiro.
Despite his age, Casemiro has done better defensively than Guimaraes in the Premier League this term.
The former Real Madrid star ranks in the 99th percentile for possession won, far above Guimaraes’ 38th percentile.
The United midfielder also edges his Brazilian teammate in duels, ranking in the 75th percentile for duel percentage won, compared to the latter’s 42nd percentile.
While Guimaraes ranks higher in possession-based metrics, United need a more defensive-minded midfielder such as Elliott Anderson, Eduardo Camavinga or James Garner.
