Tottenham will be thrilled with Ashley Phillips: Spurs starlet shows he is captain material
Tottenham fans will love what the Stoke City manager has said about Ashley Phillips this week after a big moment on the pitch.
Spurs academy youngsters are continuing to impress on loan in the EFL, and some of them will hope that they can push for a first-team spot at Tottenham on their return.
However, one centre-back is still waiting to make his debut for the Lilywhites, despite putting in consistent displays out on loan over the last couple of years.
The player in question – Ashley Phillips – is continuing to deliver the goods for Stoke City this term, and his leadership qualities have been recognised.
Tottenham’s Ashley Phillips captains Stoke City
Phillips is in his second consecutive season at Stoke, and he has established himself as a vital part of their defensive line.
With Ben Wilmot suffering a serious injury, manager Mark Robins decided to hand the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back the captain’s armband against both Ipswich and Watford.
Robins revealed that he had no hesitation in handing Phillips the armband despite the 20-year-old’s lack of experience, and admitted that he is not surprised by the way the Spurs man has responded.
On the decision regarding the captaincy, the Potters boss said (via Stoke Sentinel): “I think it was positive for him because I thought he was more aggressive in his performance.
“Sometimes it affects players in a negative way because they take responsibility to heart, and it changes the way they feel about the game. Ash just takes it in his stride.”
Phillips could play a part in the World Cup
The young Tottenham centre-back could now be handed an opportunity to play a part in the World Cup on the back of his impressive performances at Stoke.
It has been reported that Phillips has been contacted about changing his national allegiance to Wales ahead of the Dragons’ upcoming World Cup play-off.
The Tottenham man has a Welsh mother and was capped by Wales at U16 level before representing England across other age groups.
