'Amazing player' proves Wilcox right after Man Utd turned down £60m transfer last summer

Manchester United produced a commanding display to secure an impressive 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

It was a statement win for the Red Devils, strengthening their push for a coveted top-four finish.

While United supporters were celebrating the victory, the club’s hierarchy would have quietly taken pride in one of their most significant decisions from last summer.

It had become clear that the club were determined to recruit a marquee centre-forward, despite already signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo earlier in the transfer window.

Former manager Ruben Amorim had been keen on bringing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins to Old Trafford.

Amorim was determined to sign a Premier League-proven forward capable of delivering goals immediately for United.

However, the major stumbling block was the staggering price tag demanded by Aston Villa.

With three years left on his deal, the Villans wanted around £60 million to sanction his exit.

Given his age and limited resale value, Watkins never truly aligned with the forward-thinking recruitment model implemented by INEOS.

Club Director of Football Jason Wilcox strongly pushed for the signing of Benjamin Sesko, a decision that is already paying rich dividends.

Even when the 22-year-old was not scoring goals regularly in November last year, Wilcox described Sesko as an ‘amazing player‘.

It was evident that Wilcox had unwavering faith in both his decision and the immense long-term potential of the young striker.

Christopher Vivell, director of global talent at Man United, also played a key role in strengthening the case for signing Sesko.

The victory over Aston Villa only further underlined that Wilcox’s judgement was spot on.

Watkins struggled to get the better of Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro in one-on-one duels throughout the contest.

He was frequently outmuscled in physical battles and failed to hold the ball up effectively for his teammates.

Villa manager Unai Emery ultimately withdrew him at the hour mark after the striker failed to register a single shot on target.

In contrast, Sesko entered the fray in the 75th minute as a substitute for Bryan Mbeumo. He wasted little time in making an impact, smashing a loose ball into the net with the instincts of a natural centre-forward.

The lethal marksman now boasts nine Premier League goals this season. For a 22-year-old with no prior Premier League experience, his early impact at Old Trafford has been nothing short of remarkable.
