Manchester United are set to face Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League on 15th March.

It could prove to be a crucial six-pointer, with both sides locked in a fierce battle to finish in the top four and secure a coveted place in the UEFA Champions League.

Villa have spent much of the season occupying third place, but United recently leapfrogged them in the standings.

A defeat to Newcastle United meant that both sides now have 51 points but the Red Devils hold a slight edge on goal difference.

With so much at stake, it is the perfect moment to revisit some of the most memorable Premier League clashes between these two historic clubs.

Man United 3-0 Aston Villa, April 2013

Robin van Persie made the controversial switch from Arsenal to Manchester United in the summer of 2012.

Despite a slight dip in form leading up to the match, Van Persie produced a sensational first-half hat-trick to fire United to their historic 20th league title.

The Dutchman set the tone early by scoring in the second minute of the game.

Moments later came one of the most iconic goals in Premier League history.

Wayne Rooney delivered a breathtaking 40-yard pass which Van Persie met with a thunderous first-time volley that sent Old Trafford into pure delirium.

Van Persie completed his hat-trick before half-time, and by the second half the Old Trafford crowd were already dreaming of the title celebrations to come.

This was the final league title victory for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Another unforgettable clash arrived in 2009, when a 17-year-old debutant named Federico Macheda etched his name into Manchester United folklore.

Cristiano Ronaldo fired United ahead but goals from John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor turned the tables.

Ronaldo struck again to restore parity before Ferguson threw on striker Macheda for his Premier League debut.

The teenager produced a moment of magic to win the game when he turned and curled his shot into the far corner.

That goal kept United top of the league during a fierce title race with Liverpool.

This contest was huge in terms of the league standings. Many would not believe but these two sides were in a title race in the inaugral Premier League season.

Dean Saunders scored the only goal of the game, putting Ron Atkinson’s side at the top of the league with only a few weeks to go.

This defeat motivated the Red Devils as they went on a memorable unbeaten run for the rest of the season, eventually overtaking Villa to win the first-ever Premier League trophy and end their 26-year league title drought.

Aston Villa 2-2 Man United, November 2010

United eventually won the 2010-11 Premier League title, and every single point proved crucial, including a dramatic late comeback against Villa.

The game was set for a stalemate before the hosts struck twice in quick succession in the 72nd and 76th minutes.

Macheda, who famously broke Villa hearts on debut with “that” goal, came off the bench and pulled one back just five minutes later.

Nemanja Vidic scored the dramatic equaliser after meeting a cross at the far post from Nani.

This result remains a painful memory for many Aston Villa supporters, as it shattered their Champions League dreams.

The Midlands side arrived at Old Trafford needing victory to secure a Champions League spot, but United played the role of spoiler in front of their home supporters.

Goals from Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen sealed the victory and left Villa stranded on 66 points.

Newcastle United finished fifth on the same number of points but edged ahead thanks to a superior goal difference.

The Magpies secured the final Champions League place while Villa were forced to settle for Europa League football.
