Michael Carrick watches as Chelsea end Man United U21s' six-game unbeaten run
Manchester United U21s’ six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League 2 came to an end on Monday evening following a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.
First team manager Michael Carrick was in attendance, alongside son Jacey who made his U18 debut against Newcastle United in December.
United suffered a big blow early on when in-form striker was Chido brought off as a result of injury. The Danish youngster was replaced by Victor Musa.
The game’s first chance fell to the United substitute, who drove past the Chelsea defence before forcing Max Merrick to make a save.
Chelsea responded with a chance of their own as Jesse Derry struck a free-kick towards goal, but Will Murdock turned it behind for a corner.
The visitors took the lead on the half hour mark following a brilliant work from Genesis Antwi, who set up Shim Mheuka to apply the finish.
United then suffered another injury blow, as defender Sonny Aljofree suffered a head injury and was replaced by Yuel Helafu.
Chelsea made it 2-0 in the first half stoppage-time when Leo Cardoso headed Reggie Walsh’s precise cross home, leaving United with a mountain to climb.
Shortly after the interval, Antwi nearly set up Chelsea’s third after beating Diego Leon and slipping the ball through to Mheuka, but Louis Jackson made a timely intervention to avert the danger.
Pushing to increase their lead, Antwi floated a cross into the area on the hour mark, but Mheuka could not get a clean contact on the ball.
Five minutes from full-time, a rare Man United attack saw Jim Thwaites pick up Bendito Mantato whose shot was deflected behind for a corner.
The result sees Chelsea climb to the top of the standings while United drop to third, although Adam Lawrence’s side have a game in hand.
