Man Utd handed golden chance as Chelsea and Aston Villa drop points at home

0 26

Manchester United have been handed a timely Premier League boost with Chelsea and Aston Villa dropping points at home on Saturday.

The Red Devils have had a tremendous turnaround under interim head coach Michael Carrick, picking up 13 points from their last five league matches.

This has included statement wins over Manchester City and Arsenal. They were on a four-match winning run before the 1-1 draw against West Ham United.

United will be eager to return to winning ways against Everton on the road on Monday night. Ahead of the encounter, they have received a huge boost.

Villa suffered another setback at Villa Park as they shared the spoils (1-1) against Leeds United. They needed a late goal from Tammy Abraham to salvage a point.

Just like Villa, Chelsea were huge favourites to beat 19th-placed Burnley at Stamford Bridge, but they failed to capitalise on their chances in front of goal.

Joao Pedro scored an early fourth-minute goal, and it could have easily been 2-0. Cole Palmer was guilty of squandering a one-on-one chance to double the lead.

The complexion of the game changed after Wesley Fofana’s sending off in the 72nd minute. Burnley ended up scoring a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser.

With those results, United have now been handed a golden chance to secure three points and put themselves in a strong position in the Champions League race.

United are currently tied on points with Chelsea in fourth (45), but can go three clear by beating Everton.

The Mancunian giants can also go within three points of third-placed Villa with a victory on Merseyside.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can capitalise on the setbacks for their league rivals by returning to winning ways at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
