I think there's a fair middle ground to be found between underlying stats saying we're better than our league position shows, and the belief that stats are all well and good but they don't mean anything material if the goals scored and points accrued stats are still unsatisfactory

It's a bit like when people talk about expected goals for us. How can you expect a bucket of goal when Kyogo is/was up front trying to score them?

I've never actually known if the xG stat takes into consideration the relative quality of the player who the chances are falling to.

Would the exact same chance have a higher xG stat if Haaland or Ekitike were on the end of it, than if Kyogo was, for example?


its an average of all the shots taken from that position, but unsure if it accounts for where the goalkeeper is stood
