6 duels won/game: Man Utd should now sign 21yo Italian star as Diogo Dalot upgrade
Manchester United should explore a deal for Brentford star Michael Kayode to reinforce the right-back department during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are likely to focus on defensive signings later this year. A holding midfielder will be a top priority for the club, but a defender could be signed too.
Juventus ace Pierre Kalulu, who can play in central defence or right-back, has recently emerged as a target. He could be available for around £26 million.
Kalulu has found success as a right-back under manager Luciano Spalletti, but we believe the club should look within the Premier League to reinforce the position.
In our view, Brentford’s Kayode would be a fine acquisition for the Red Devils. He would provide an upgrade on Diogo Dalot, with Noussair Mazraoui possibly on his way out.
The 21-year-old has been brilliant with his defensive attributes for the Bees. He has won almost six duels per league game this season, with 4.5 recoveries, 2.8 clearances and 1.9 tackles.
In comparison, Dalot, who has been the regular right-back for United in recent weeks, has won only four duels per outing with 3.6 recoveries, 2.7 clearances and 1.5 tackles on average.
Kayode has not made a direct goal contribution like Dalot (four), but the Italian has provided a genuine set-piece threat for the opposition with his sensational long throws.
The Fiorentina graduate has been compared to former Stoke City defender Rory Delap for his long throws, but he appears much better with his pinpoint accuracy.
Kayode’s long throw recently contributed to Brentford’s equaliser against Arsenal at home.
United are only second in terms of set-piece goals (14) to the Gunners this campaign, and Kayode’s arrival would no doubt add an extra layer to the club’s set-piece threat.
Kayode was signed by Brentford after a short-term loan stint for £14.5 million, and he has certainly proved a huge bargain. The Bees will eye a big profit from a future sale.
Brentford have built their reputation as a selling club for the right price. United should test the Bees’ resolve with a £40m offer for Kayode if the London club miss out on Europe.
Keith Andrews’ side are more likely to keep him for another year in case of European qualification.
Meanwhile, Mazraoui could be on his way out if United sign a new right-back. The hierarchy may seek to cash in on the Moroccan, who may want regular playing time going forward.
