Derby defeat ends unbeaten start
Some you win, some you lose. And for the first time this season Royal Wootton Bassett Town tasted defeat in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town.
And it was as frustrating a loss as it could possibly be, with Corsham snatching victory with two late goals in a game in which the visitors had rarely threatened. With the loss, Bassett also missed out on the chance to go back to the top of the table, instead slipping below Corsham into fourth.
In a wide open title race in which five teams still have strong hopes of finishing top, there is still a long, long way to go. But this was an opportunity missed for James Lally's side.
Bassett had a great chance early on when Corsham 'keeper Lily Lewis fluffed a clearance. The ball fell straight to Hannah Gulliver but she rushed her effort and shot wide.
A Tori Taylor corner then bounced around the box, falling to Kelly Nightingale who flashed just wide of the post before Lewis saved well with her feet after a surging run from Maddy Elliott.
A final chance of the half then fell to Tori Taylor who steered wide after latching onto Lauren Bulley's ball over the top.
Corsham came into the game more after the restart, but still Bassett had the better opportunities as Nightingale curled just off target and Gulliver forced Lewis to tip over.
But Corsham ultimately made Bassett pay for their profligacy.
After patient build up a ball into the right channel stretched the Bassett defence before Nancy Silk's square pass inside picked out Lyons, who rounded Millie Powell before slotting home.
The smash and grab was then complete as Lyons latched onto a long throw before lifting a ball over the top to Ruby Hopkins. She patiently held play up before unselfishly squaring back inside for an unmarked Lyons who again danced past Powell and tapped in.
