Not only Sesko: Carrick praises three unsung Man United heroes after dramatic West Ham draw
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has praised three players for their contribution to the 1-1 draw against West Ham United.
The Red Devils appeared destined for their first defeat under Carrick before substitute Benjamin Sesko produced a thunderous 96th-minute equaliser to rescue a point.
While Sesko rightfully grabbed the headlines, it was Leny Yoro who had quietly ensured the deficit remained manageable with two heroic defensive interventions at 1-0.
The United head coach took the time to praise Yoro for his courage in decisive moments.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “Leny [Yoro] has done great, two counter-attacks and putting two big challenges in, Bryan [Mbeumo]’s recovery runs, Amad’s recovery runs.
“It’s quite easy to lose that game 2-0 in those circumstances, but that’s when the spirit counts and I’ve spoke to the players about that.”
In the 91st minute, Callum Wilson burst down the right flank and shaped to pull the trigger, only for Yoro to execute a perfectly timed, goal-saving sliding challenge.
Two minutes later, the 20-year-old bailed United again.
Adama Traore, fresh off the bench, was slipped through into acres of space with a precise through ball.
The Spaniard struck firmly at goal, but Yoro threw himself into another outstanding block to divert the effort away from danger.
Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo may have struggled to influence the final third, but their relentless work rate in the closing stages epitomised United’s fighting spirit.
Carrick rolled the dice in the 82nd minute, sacrificing Diogo Dalot for Joshua Zirkzee in an all-out push for an equaliser.
As West Ham looked to exploit counter-attacking opportunities, Mbeumo and Diallo sprinted back repeatedly to support Yoro and Lisandro Martinez.
In the end, it was a hard-earned, character-filled point that kept the Red Devils firmly in fourth place in the Premier League table.
