Former Patriots Defender Asks Important Question About Christian Gonzalez

The New England Patriots came up short in Super Bowl LX, and now, the team has to quickly pivot and begin working on figuring out how to improve its roster for the upcoming 2026 season. Of course, the first order of business involves keeping the talented players already on this team in town.

Among the players up for a new contract this offseason is superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez. In his third season with the team, Gonzalez once again proved himself to be one of the top players at his position in the NFL, as he racked up 69 tackles and 10 pass deflections in 14 games, which helped him earn the first Pro Bowl selection of his career.

As he prepares to enter the fourth season of his rookie contract, it’s clear that Gonzalez needs a new deal soon. If you ask one of his former Patriots teammates, Raekwon McMillan, it sounds like he believes the team should have already handed Gonzalez a big-money contract extension.

“Question of the day: Did Christian Gonzalez leave Foxboro without a contract today?” McMillan wrote in a post on X.

For as good as he was in the regular season, Gonzalez was even better in the playoffs. He helped shut down star wide receivers like Ladd McConkey, Courtland Sutton and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, with his work on the latter being the most impressive of the bunch.

Assuming the Pats exercise Gonzalez’s fifth-year option, which will likely be one of its easiest decisions of the offseason, it will have two years to get a new contract done with him. This is a matter the front office should look to take care of this offseason, though, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gonzalez gets a new deal at some point in the next few months.
