Thomas Frank reveals if Micky van de Ven is ready to be Tottenham captain

0 1

Thomas Frank has spoken about Micky van de Ven’s leadership credentials as the Tottenham star gets set to lead the side out against Newcastle United.

Many pundits have raised serious questions about Cristian Romero’s captaincy credentials after the events of the last week.

Following the Tottenham captain’s outburst on transfer deadline day, he proceeded to be sent off for the second time this season, to go with his eight yellow cards.

That means that Romero has already been suspended three times this season, and this time, he will have to sit out for four matches at a crucial point in Spurs’ season when the squad is ravaged by injuries.

Thomas Frank discusses Micky van de Ven’s leadership qualities for Tottenham

There have been suggestions that Romero could ask to leave Tottenham this summer, amidst interest from Spain.

If that comes to pass, the Lilywhites would be looking for a new captain, and the obvious candidate would be the current vice-captain, Micky van de Ven, whom Frank admitted can still improve some aspects of his leadership.

When asked about Van de Ven’s capacity credentials ahead of the centre-back taking the armband against Newcastle, the Dane told Football.London: “He’s young, 24 I think. It’s not the first time he’s been captain this season, it must be at least four or five times. I think he still needs to learn and bring bits, but there’s both communication and calmness and interaction with his team-mates and do his job on the pitch, of course.”

Frank says Spurs teenager is ready to make his first start against Newcastle

With Desinty Udogie now being added to Tottenham’s injury list and with Pedro Porro and Ben Davies also out of action, January signing Souza is expected to get his first start for the North Londoners this evening.

Thomas Frank admits he was impressed with what he saw of the teenager when he came on against Man United.

When asked about Souza being in line for his full Tottenham debut, Frank said: “He did very well, I’m very happy for him. Coming from Brazil, 19-years-old, to Tottenham, to the Premier League, getting his debut in one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. That’s a big thing so I hope him and his family are proud.

“He did 40 minutes last time didn’t he… so I hope he is [ready to play against Newcastle]. He’s still shortish [on fitness] but I liked what I saw from him when he came on, nice and positive.”
