Mauricio Pochettino knows why his Tottenham connection is so ‘special’ and he’s absolutely right
Mauricio Pochettino’s time at Tottenham was one of the happiest, most positive spells in the club’s recent history, but why was it so good?
We may well see Pochettino return to Spurs in the near future. With Thomas Frank under immense pressure, speculation is surging with suggestions that the Argentinian will come back in the summer after the World Cup.
Pochettino has dropped hints related to Tottenham again and again, and the fans are very much behind the idea of him coming back.
Whether that happens or not, one thing has been made abundantly clear this week: Mauricio Pochettino absolutely loves this football club, and there’s a key reason for that special connection.
Daniel Levy was key to Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino’s success
Pochettino was speaking on the latest episode of the High Performance Podcast, and at the end of the interview was asked why his relationship with Spurs is so important to him. Interestingly, his answer largely hinged on Daniel Levy.
He said: “The connection always was amazing. With Daniel [Levy], when we arrived to feel the trust of the owner of the club made us to feel like, I said before, we could ask for the chance to create a laboratory there, and he spent money to provide us what we wanted. He trusted us from the beginning and he supported us.
“We had the possibility to create something special at Tottenham with the project that we had ahead; to build the new stadium, to finish the training ground and to create the facilities that today make Tottenham one of best clubs in the world, in term of facilities. That’s because of the trust of the owner.”
Pochettino loved making memories with Spurs fans
Of course, that backing from the owner was massive for Pochettino and helped him build an exciting squad at Spurs. But, it’s all about the fans at the heart of it.
Pochettino added: “I think we were very successful and that’s the thing. We created very good emotions with the fans and that stays in the memories, in the way that we played and the way that we approached the games in the way that we did.
“I think that is why it’s so special with Spurs because we had a moment there. I was a very young coach from Southampton. We came and Daniel trusted in us and gave us the confidence and had the patience for us to provide, to show our quality as coaches. There are not too many clubs that can do that.”
It is thought Pochettino would say yes to Spurs if he was asked to take up the top job there again. Given everything he’s said about his affiliation with the club, that’s not surprising at all.
