How one Arsenal transfer accidentally helped Harry Kane explode at Tottenham
It all worked out for the best for Tottenham when they missed out on a former transfer target, giving Harry Kane the chance to succeed at the club.
As far as the modern era at Spurs goes, there has been no player more successful or impactful than Harry Kane.
Sadly, he’s gone now, but Tottenham fans had many years of great memories thanks to Kane. Seeing one of their own rise through the ranks and excel on the biggest stage was a joy, but it could all have been very different.
While we hope for a Kane return one day, former boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed how the club very nearly blocked Kane’s development path with the signing of Danny Welbeck.

Tottenham tried to sign Danny Welbeck but Arsenal won the race
In his appearance on the High Performance Podcast, Pochettino discussed Tottenham’s transfer strategy back in the day and it turns out Spurs tried to sign Welbeck, before Arsenal beat them to the punch.
He said: “The club made an offer for Danny Welbeck then at Manchester United but Oliver Giroud got injured at Arsenal and they then made a bigger offer for Welbeck and he went to Arsenal instead, which was lucky as it allowed Harry Kane to get his chance.
“I was lucky with Harry Kane. Not because that happened, but because he was something special… When we explained to the club that we want him on the squad, it was difficult to convince them because it is the most difficult thing in football is to anticipate these things.
“You can see that Harry Kane today is one of the best striker in the world. It’s easy. But to anticipate or to project that Harry Kane is going to be one of the best strikers in England. No, they say you are guessing. You have no idea. But that is also one of our skills that we have.”
Spurs could do with Welbeck now
Interestingly, the Danny Welbeck that signed for Arsenal was effective but didn’t quite excel. He scored 32 goals for the Gunners in 126 games, but it’s right now that he’s actually at his best.
Since joining Brighton, the veteran striker has really found his feet and continues to make an impact in the Premier League.
This season alone, Wlebeck has eight goals in the league. Given Tottenham’s struggles, that’s a player we could really do with having signed now.
