Josh McDaniels Doesn’t Close Door On Leaving Patriots For Head Coaching Gig
The New England Patriots are getting ready for the Super Bowl, and Josh McDaniels’ return has played a major role.
The Patriots’ offense ranked second in points, third in yards and 27th in penalties. McDaniels has won six Super Bowls with the Patriots in his career, three of which have come with him as the offensive coordinator. He has had two stints as a head coach in the NFL.
McDaniels was fired in both of his stints as a head coach. He was fired by the Denver Broncos during his second season as the head coach in 2010. He became head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022 and was fired after Week 8 of the 2023 season.
He is 20-33 as a head coach, but on Monday, he was asked about potentially taking on another head coaching job. He left the door open to the idea, but his answer was vague.
“Every day’s one day at a time for me now. You know what I mean?” McDaniels said when asked if he still aspires to be a head coach, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “And I think I’m where I’m supposed to be. And I’m incredibly happy to be here and doing what I’m doing. I love my job. I love the role that I have. I love the group that I’m with. So whatever that plan is down the road, we’ll figure that out. But I couldn’t be more happy with where I’m at.”
He did not shut down the idea of leaving the Patriots for a third time in his career to pursue a head coaching job. He has been a very successful coordinator, but has not cracked the code to being a successful head coach.
He is a huge part of the Patriots’ success this season, and played a major role in Drake Maye being an MVP candidate. Despite his failures as a head coach previously, he could soon be on the radar for teams that need a head coach.
McDaniels was not hired in this year’s coaching cycle, but another year of success in New England could make him a candidate for any openings next offseason.
