Patriots’ Stefon Diggs Gives Blunt Response To Odd Retirement Question
New England Patriots players and coaches spoke to the media on Monday night, and Stefon Diggs was asked about his future.
Diggs signed with the Patriots last offseason, coming off a season where he tore his ACL. In an exchange with a reporter, the 32-year-old was asked how much longer he wants to play in the NFL.
“Honestly, I’m going to ride until the wheels fall off,” Diggs said on Monday night.
Diggs’ ability was brought into question this offseason. He was going into his age-32 season and just suffered a major knee injury. However, the Patriots took a chance on him and gave him a three-year, $63.5 million deal.
Considering how he is playing now, that might not be his final contract. Diggs’ play this season looked like he has more than two seasons left in the tank.
He has emerged as a leader for the team and was the clear No. 1 receiver. He led the team with 1,013 receiving yards and 85 receptions. He scored four receiving touchdowns in the regular season.
In the playoffs, he has 11 receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown. Diggs has a chance to win a ring and really cement his legacy. He is a four-time Pro Bowler and a former First-Team All-Pro.
In 2020, Diggs led the league in receptions and yards. He may not have been as dominant this season, but it’s hard to imagine the Patriots reaching the Super Bowl without him. Next year, a full season removed from tearing his ACL, he could be even better.
Diggs is a nominee for the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year Award. Trevor Lawrence, Christian McCaffrey, Dak Prescott and Aidan Hutchinson are the other nominees.
Despite a devastating injury and his age, Diggs does not see himself retiring in the near future. He is determined to keep playing until he cannot provide anything to the team.
