‘Big Six’ factor, incredible form: Why Man United are set for a sensational end to the 2025–26 season
Manchester United have registered three Premier League victories on the bounce.
They have reclaimed their fourth-place spot in the league table after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fulham yesterday.
Caretaker head coach Michael Carrick has enjoyed a perfect start and the early signs suggest that the Red Devils could finish the 2025-26 campaign with a bang.
Dominant vs ‘Big Six’
United have now faced five of the traditional ‘big six’ sides at least once this season.
They have proven they can rise to the biggest occasions, beating every one of those rivals at least once (except Tottenham Hotspur, whom they face this weekend).
The Red Devils defeated Chelsea 2-1 before ending their Anfield hoodoo with the same scoreline.
They drew 2-2 with Spurs before registering blockbuster wins against Manchester City and Arsenal under Carrick.
Had it not been for their damaging slump in November and December, United could genuinely have been in the title conversation.
Incredible form
It is no exaggeration to say United might be genuine title contenders had they not dropped costly points against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United and West Ham United.
This has been a uniquely unpredictable Premier League season, with no team in the top six able to truly pull away.
It also highlights how so-called ‘weaker’ sides are no longer easy opponents in this fiercely competitive league.
United have won three consecutive games and it is currently the best run of form in the division.
If they can maintain this surge, a top-two finish is not out of the question, especially given the stuttering form of Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Second-lowest defeats
Every poor United performance is magnified, a by-product of being one of the biggest clubs in world.
Opinions may be divided, but the statistics paint a far clearer picture.
United have suffered just five league defeats all season, with only Arsenal losing fewer games (three).
The Old Trafford side have also been ruthless in the final third, with 44 league goals, bettered only by City and Arsenal.
On that evidence, Champions League nights at Old Trafford next season are starting to feel less like hope and more like expectation.
