A cold afternoon in the capital saw Queen’s Park make the away trip to face Boroughmuir Thistle in SWPL2 action. Head coach Ross Stormonth chose to name an unchanged side from the one that secured victory against Dundee United a week prior.
A slow start to the game from both sides, it took a while for both sides to get into the swing of things. Queen’s were the first to threaten at goal as they attempted to use the wide areas and make the most of Sophie Rutherford’s pace however good defending from the hosts stopped her in her tracks. Ellie Kane and Rosie McQuillan also attempted some good holdup play and continue their recent goalscoring efforts but again strong defending from Thistle thwarted the spider’s attack.

Queen’s Park were forced into an early change with captain Abby Callaghan picking up an unfortunate injury around the 20th minute mark. This saw Amelie Chomczuk come on in place of the skipper, a change that did see some more creativity as the youngster looked to make her mark on the game.
The hosts did look more dangerous as the half went on as they put in some dangerous long balls towards goal but some excellent defending by the Queen’s backline and a couple decent saves from Jasmine McPhie stopped any threat of goal. Ultimately, a scrappy first half came to a close scoreless at the break.

The second half saw both teams look to attack more with Boroughmuir looking to use their width through Leah Sidey but some very strong defending by Morgan Hay stopped the full back’s efforts to create. Jasmine McPhie was tested a few more times with long range efforts but none came to pass for Boroughmuir.
The introduction of Dara Ositelu saw a spark lit under QP as the Scotland u17 internationalist used the wide areas well to create chances. Murron Cunningham’s engine in the middle of the pitch allowed for distribution wide through a number of long balls which caused plenty of problems for Thistle’s backline.

A long ball over the top for Queen’s found Summer Thomson in behind, lobbing Beth Rennie however agony struck as she was ruled to be marginally offside. This only gave fuel to the fire for our number 17 as she was found once more through on goal and this time an excellent strike made its way past Rennie for Queen’s Park to take the lead.

Keeping their shape and thwarting any danger from Boroughmuir’s high press was the main objective from this point forward as the spider’s looked to remain in front with this real “six-pointer” matchup reaching its climax.
Strong defence held out and a wonderful save from shot-stopper Jasmine McPhie saw Queen’s Park hold on and claim all 3 points. This victory sees us move 3 points clear of Boroughmuir in 2nd place with the split quickly approaching. It also means Ross Stormonth’s unbeaten league campaign continues as we move into next weekend’s match against bottom side Stirling Uni.
