Tottenham tipped for familiar pattern as another former Chelsea boss in linked
A former Tottenham official has said that a 45-year-old manager is in contention to replace Thomas Frank, but Spurs have some concerns about his temperament.
The issue that the North Londoners face is that the top targets to replace Frank – Mauricio Pochettino, Andoni Iraola, and Oliver Glasner may not be available until the summer.
There have been suggestions over the last few days that Tottenham could turn to Xavi Hernandez, who is allegedly open to an approach from N17.
There is one other manager with top-level Premier League experience who is also said to be on the Lilywhites’ radar.
Tottenham have one Enzo Maresca concern
Some sources have suggested that Marseca is being considered by Tottenham as a potential Frank replacement after the Italian was unceremoniously sacked by Chelsea on New Year’s Day.
Former Spurs scout Mick Brown has now confirmed that Maresca is indeed one of the names on the Lilywhites’ wishlist, but suggested that his short fuse is of concern to the North London club’s hierarchy.
When asked if the former Chelsea boss is a contender to replace Frank, Brown told Football Insider: “Tottenham will have a look at Maresca, I’m sure. He’s available after leaving Chelsea, so that immediately makes him a contender because there isn’t exactly a long list of available managers at the moment.
“I think there are a few doubts about Maresca, he seems to be a bit of a loose cannon, and you can see that in the other clubs he’s managed. He couldn’t get out of Leicester quick enough but they weren’t massively concerned by that, then he goes to Chelsea and is constantly at war with the owners.”
Brown has doubts over Marseca’s fit for Spurs
Tottenham have hired a couple of former Chelsea managers over recent years – including AVB, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte – but Brown believes that Marseca’s Blues connections may not go down well with the Spurs fan base.
He revealed that he is not convinced that the 45-year-old is the right man to get the Lilywhites out of the predicament they are in.
Brown continued about Marseca: “Is that the type of manager Tottenham want? One who is going to kick up a fuss at any opportunity and may well be more trouble than he’s worth?
“The fans don’t need an excuse to protest at the moment either, and bringing in a former Chelsea manager isn’t likely to go down well with them. I’m not totally convinced he’s the answer to Tottenham’s problems, but because he’s available and he’s got that experience with Chelsea, he will be on their list.”
