Robbie Keane reacts to rumours he could replace Thomas Frank at Tottenham
Robbie Keane has addressed the speculation suggesting that he could be in line to replace Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur.
While the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola have been named as top contenders to replace Frank, Keane’s name has also been thrown into the mix.
The Tottenham legend has had a fantastic start to his managerial career and is now impressing at Hungarian side Ferencvaros.
It was recently reported by Football Insider that Keane is the favourite to replace Frank at Spurs, but the outlet claimed that the 45-year-old is unlikely to be one of the leading candidates being looked at by the club’s hierarchy.
Robbie Keane plays down links to Tottenham job
The former Spurs striker has admitted that he is not paying too much attention to the rumours, insisting that he is happy at Ferencvaros.
He also backed Thomas Frank to turn things around at the North London club despite the Dane’s recent struggles.
When asked if he is aware of the speculation linking him with a return to N17, Kane told The Independent: “I think it’s impossible not be aware of anything these days, to be honest with you, especially when you have two kids who are Tottenham fans.
“Thomas Frank is a very, very good manager. He just started there. As I said, a lot of stuff gets written, even when I was a player, going somewhere, going different places.
“But I’ll be honest with you, it goes over my head. I concentrate on what I’m doing. I think it’s nice that your name is there. Who puts it there? I have no clue, but it shows you that I’m doing OK to be even put there. I’m obviously aware of it, but I am happy here.”
Keane admits he retains a special connection with Spurs
The Irishman played 306 times for the Lilywhites across two spells, scoring 122 goals and registering 43 assists.
Keane admitted that his connection with Tottenham will never go away, and is confident that the club will get back to where they belong sooner rather than later.
When asked if Spurs still meant a lot to him, he said: “Absolutely, you can’t be at a club that long if it doesn’t. I mean, that’s natural. It’s a fantastic club. Unbelievable training and the stadium is amazing, of course – as we all know – and really good players. I mean, that’s natural. It’s a fantastic club. “Yes, they’ve got a lot of injuries but it’s certainly a place that always look out for, as I said, my two boys, they’re Tottenham fans and are always watching and, of course, like me, I watch every game regardless of it being Tottenham or anyone. So it’s a wonderful football club. And I’m sure there’s no doubt that they’ll get back to where they belong.”
