Masterplan: Carrick to make two attacking Man Utd changes vs Fulham with surprise formation twist - view
Manchester United will be eyeing a third straight Premier League win when they entertain Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils have picked up form since Michael Carrick took charge as interim manager this month.
They have registered statement wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, and have jumped into fourth place in the standings.
The onus is on continuing the winning run. The club are aiming for a third consecutive victory for the first time since October.
Before facing the Cottagers, we anticipate Carrick to spring a surprise by making two attacking changes from last weekend.
United were brilliant in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. It was their first away league win at the London side since 2017.
Unfortunately, the win came at a cost with Patrick Dorgu sustaining a hamstring injury. The Dane has been ruled out for 10 weeks.
With Dorgu on the sidelines, it appears a no-brainer decision to start Matheus Cunha on the left wing after his late winner at Arsenal.
There appears to be no need for another change, but we fancy Carrick to unleash Benjamin Sesko upfront against the Cottagers on Sunday.
Sesko was an unused substitute against Man City before coming on late against the Gunners, where he played a big part in the winning goal.
Amad Diallo was far from effective on the right wing against Arsenal, and Carrick could consider dropping the Ivorian for Sesko to lead the line.
This would obviously mean Bryan Mbeumo slotting on the right wing, with Cunha (left wing) and Bruno Fernandes (number 10) forming the rest of United’s attack.
There could be a formation twist in possession too. Carrick could start with a 4-2-3-1 set-up, but may shift to a 4-2-2-2 system when the Red Devils have the ball.
In that way, Cunha could feature in a familiar attacking midfield role alongside Fernandes, while Mbeumo could play up top with Sesko against Marco Silva’s side.
Fulham are likely to operate with a low defensive block on Sunday. It presents a different challenge for United, compared to Man City and Arsenal in recent weeks.
Sesko’s physical and aerial presence in the box could be crucial in a game like this. Hence, we anticipate the manager to reinstate the Slovenian in the starting line-up alongside Cunha.
