Sam Allardyce blown away by Man Utd star with 100% duels won vs Arsenal, he could sign new contract
Manchester United continued their ascendancy in the Premier League table after a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The Red Devils went into the game as potential underdogs but prevailed with a fantastic win. The club have now moved into the top four with 38 points.
Interim manager Michael Carrick must be applauded for sparking the turnaround. United have beaten Manchester City and Arsenal since he took charge.
Harry Maguire was picked in central defence alongside Lisandro Martinez in both games, and the Englishman has certainly done his reputation no harm.
The 32-year-old won 100 percent of his duels against Arsenal and has been hailed as a ‘top-class’ defender by former Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce.
He wrote in an Instagram post: “Delighted for Harry Maguire – two excellent performances under Michael Carrick and proves again why he’s a top class defender.”
Maguire could sign a new Man Utd contract
United recently confirmed that they will part ways with midfielder Casemiro when his contract expires at the end of the season (June 30).
The club obviously had the option to trigger a one-year extension clause on his £350,000 per week deal, but decided against it.
Maguire’s contract also expires in the summer, but the Red Devils have not made an official announcement confirming his departure.
This suggests that the club are very much open to negotiating fresh terms with the centre-back, who will play a big role in the coming months.
With Matthijs de Ligt nursing a nagging back problem, Maguire looks poised to be a guaranteed starter alongside Martinez in the heart of the defence.
United have put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League, having propelled into fourth place with two statement wins this month.
If the Red Devils were to return to the Champions League or another European competition next term, they would need a larger squad to handle the extra workload.
This could prove a key factor in keeping Maguire in the squad. Still, an extension could depend on whether the £80 million signing is willing to accept reduced terms.
United may want him to accept a reasonable pay cut on his current salary of £190,000 per week in order to commit his future to the club for the next two seasons or longer.
The hierarchy could make a late decision on Maguire’s future. It may happen sometime in mid-to-late May when United know about their European status for next season.
