Tottenham fans share mixed reaction to Andy Robertson update, ‘mass protest needed’
With just days left in the January transfer window, Tottenham will now be scrambling to make their third signing, as Andy Robertson is set to stay at Liverpool.
Partway through January, Spurs made Brazilian youngster Souza their second signing of the window. That’s why it came as such a surprise that Tottenham were linked with Robertson just a day later.
The Liverpool man is set to become a free agent in the summer but the Lilywhites wanted to pay to sign him sooner. It was even believed the player himself was open to the move, but one party did not agree.
On Sunday night, Liverpool pulled the plug on the Robertson deal, deciding they wanted to keep him for the rest of the season. For Spurs fans, though, it’s not the end of the world
Tottenham fans react as Liverpool pull plug on Andy Robertson deal
With news emerging of Tottenham’s failed attempt to sign Andy Robertson, we took a dive into the world of social media to see how the supporters felt. It seems that generally, a lot of the fans are just keen for the club to push on and sign different players.
One said: “Oh no… anyway, let’s sign some attackers.”
Another wrote: “Go sign a top left winger and a top midfielder. We already have Souza so didn’t need anything in that position. It was a good signing, but we should have other priorities.”
However, others were more gutted that we won’t get to see Robertson in Lilywhite, while some think the move will still happen eventually.
One fan commented, “I’d really come around to liking the idea of the move. This is a shame,” while another added, “See you in the summer.”
Meanwhile, there was plenty of outrage at the fact that the club has not been able to get the deal over the line, with the hierarchy coming in for some criticism.
Replies included, “I’m so done. Mass protest needed because we didn’t want to pay £5m,” and “This club is embarrassing.” Another said: “Rejected by a 31-year-old. Crazy world.” One Tottenham fan even said: “We have the chuckle brothers in charge and we are sinking like the titanic.”
For what it’s worth, though, it does sound like the player was happy to come and that Spurs had made a suitable offer of around £3m, but squad depth issues at Liverpool are what really brought the negotiations to an end.
What Robertson would have left behind at Liverpool
Since joining Liverpool from Hull City back in 2017, Robertson has racked up over 360 appearances for the Reds, scoring 12 goals and registering a whopping 68 assists.
His trophy cabinet includes a Champions League title from 2018/19, two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cup wins. Robertson has also won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the Community Shield.
The 31-year-old has also captained Liverpool on multiple occasions and is beloved by the fans at Anfield. Not bad for a player who cost just £8m.
Spurs fans were conflicted over the Robertson rumours at first, but there’s no denying that they would have been gifted a top-level talent with exceptional experience had the move gone through.
