Man United Women beat Arsenal to set up League Cup final clash with Chelsea

0 2

Manchester United Women beat Arsenal 1-0 in the Subway Women’s League Cup semi-final at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening, booking their place in the final for the first time.

Arsenal came flying out of the blocks, with Frida Maanum forcing Phallon Tullis-Joyce to make a crucial save inside the second minute.

United’s first chance arrived after 15 minutes, when Ellen Wangerheim, making her full debut, ran to the far post, but her knock-down was collected by Anneke Borbe.

Both sides kept pushing for the opener, but were unable to fashion a clear-cut chance until the first half stoppage-time when United broke the deadlock.

Borbe, in an attempt to play out of the back, gave the ball away, and it fell nicely to Elisbeth Terland, who fired it into the bottom corner.

Arsenal started the second half on the front foot and nearly found the leveller, when Alessia Russo latched onto Victoria Pelova’s pass, but dragged her effort wide.

The Gunners’ pursuit to restore parity suffered a massive blow after the hour mark, following the sending off of Olivia Smith.

Despite the numerical advantage, United could not seize control of possession, but defended resolutely to see out the contest.

Marc Skinner’s side will now face Chelsea, who beat Manchester City 1-0 in the other semi-final, a repeat of last season’s Women’s FA Cup final, where United lost 3-0.

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League, aiming to return to winning ways in the competition.
