Tottenham fans call Thomas Frank ‘delusional’ for his latest press conference remark
Tottenham Hotspur supporters have now turned on Thomas Frank after the West Ham defeat and his ‘closer to something very good’ claim.
Tottenham Hotspur have done everything but build on their Europa League success back in May last year, with results on the pitch only getting worse following the appointment of Thomas Frank six months ago.
The Spurs boss has looked out of his depth in the Tottenham dugout, with his side failing to deliver any sort of attacking football that supporters can get behind.
Saturday’s defeat to 18th-placed West Ham United proved to be the final tipping point for an already frustrated Spurs faithful, who sang about Frank getting the sack following the dismal showing.
The Tottenham boss has since opened up on his assessment of the game, making the bold claim that Spurs are close to something very good.
Speaking after the match, Frank attempted to explain his perspective on recent performances and why he believes his side are closer to improvement than decline.
He told football.london: “Let’s say the Bournemouth and the Villa and this game here, if the players stop running, or stop doing anything, or not working hard, and we are not the team that is closest to winning, then you can say OK.
“But I think the team is working very hard. And I still think, and I know it sounds a little bit crazy, that we are closer to something very good, than further away.
“I think you all saw the game today, we could easily have won this one 2-1. I think it is no excuses.
“But also the reason we are a little bit down to the bare bones with players. And we also need some of the offensive players to score a goal or two. All that is difficult for me to do like that and click with a finger.
“But I can promise that I am sitting here, giving everything, every single day. I feel the trust from everyone and there is only one way, we need to keep going.”
Tottenham fans react to Thomas Frank comments after West Ham defeat
Spurs fans did not react positively to Frank’s remarks, with many taking to social media to express even more frustration at the direction of the club.
Replying to his comments, one supporter said: “He is literally begging, saying do not sack me yet,” while another added: “What else is he going to say? Obviously, he has to come out with some positives, say the players are trying, everyone is on board, we were the better team and so on. What else can he say?”
Other supporters were far more direct in their criticism, with one commenting: “He is not the man for the job, he should have been sacked after that surrender at Woolwich. We are in a mess, a stop gap might not save us. Far too many games to go. Cannot believe it is mid-January and I am looking at the table and worrying about teams below us catching us.”
Another wondered: “We are losing games and he said we should keep going?” while another remarked: “We are closer to him being sacked, that is the good part.” One Tottenham fan simply said: “Delusional.”
Further references to Frank’s claim that Spurs are close to something good saw fans respond with comments such as: “Closer to a relegation fight after today,” and “Load of rubbish. I was close to winning the lottery, if only I had got the other five numbers.”
The toxicity from Spurs fans could force Frank decision
Thomas Frank has not been sacked from any job since the start of his managerial career, but that could change at Spurs as the writing appears to be on the wall. Once the fans turn against you, there is rarely a way back.
Reports reveal that Tottenham are at least ‘weighing up’ a decision to sack Frank following the 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham.
The poor run of results has not been confined to recent weeks, having stretched back for several months, with the Dane looking increasingly unable to resolve issues such as the poor home form and the lack of front-footed football.
His determination to turn things around is admirable, but this may be a situation beyond him, with the relationship between Frank and the Spurs fanbase continuing to deteriorate. He may just have to accept that he could be pushed out the door only six months after his appointment.
