Red Sox Insider Reveals What’s Next After Ranger Suarez Signing

Just days after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox pivoted and signed left-handed starting pitcher Ranger Suarez to a five-year, $130 million contract in free agency. After not having signed a free agent to a major league deal before landing Suarez, the Sox got on the board in a big way with this move.

After trading for starters Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, the decision to sign Suarez was a bit surprising, as the starting rotation is pretty low on the list of the team’s needs right now. However, Suarez’s presence could open the door for the front office to make a slew of other moves.

That’s precisely what Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo of MassLive is expecting to happen. Boston’s two biggest needs, another big bat for the lineup and a left-handed relief pitcher, still exist, and he believes that Craig Breslow and company will make more moves to address these holes.

“Even after Wednesday’s surprising deal with Suárez, the Red Sox still need to add another bat (likely to play second base or third base) and the club could also use a veteran bullpen arm or two,” Cotillo wrote. “The only thing that’s clear is that Craig Breslow isn’t done, both when it comes to his roster and figuring out the club’s finances before Opening Day.”

While Boston’s starting rotation looks dominant, the rest of the roster could use some help. The Red Sox have already been active on the trade market this offseason, and they could look to make even more moves in this department to help balance things out across the board.

What that will look like is unknown, but the addition of Suarez gives the Sox some flexibility that they did not have 24 hours ago. As a result, it seems like more moves are on the horizon for Boston as it looks to close out the offseason with a bang.
