Report from Holly Porter

Starting the year on the road, the Elite Development Squad opened 2026 with maximum points, showing their ability to win despite a performance which, as expected after a fixture break, wasn’t their sharpest.

A fast start saw Woking ahead within five minutes. Battling in the box, Trickett was tripped in attacking action, with a penalty kick instantly awarded.

A well-taken spot kick followed, with Trickett sending Wealdstone’s goalkeeper the wrong way, firing into the bottom right corner not only to take the lead, but also to maintain his 100% record from the spot this season.

A period followed where neither team could really exercise authority. Before the leveller, a close-range effort fell nicely for the hosts, with Verga doing well to save with his legs in the 10th minute.

The 17th minute saw the scoreline levelled. Caught in possession, Woking lost out to Wealdstone’s attack, with Verga dispossessed, allowing the hosts to direct an effort into the empty net.

Woking reacted well, with Boxall attempting from range moments after the restart, but his 18th-minute effort could not be directed away from the Wealdstone no.1. Shortly after, Trickett, also from range, tried his luck, but his shot took a deflection which dragged the effort wide.

A forced substitution in the 30th minute saw McQueen sidelined after receiving treatment on his knee earlier in the clash. Upon initial assessment, the injury is seemingly minor, with the hope that his absence will be brief.

Boxall then smacked the outside of the post with a long-range 31st-minute effort, which was the closest the Cards came to regaining the lead before half-time.

A scramble in the box just before the break provided a golden opportunity for Woking to get ahead. Patterson’s free-kick delivery proved troublesome to clear for Wealdstone, which allowed for several attempts in the box from the Cards. Whilst they couldn’t quickly clear their lines, the hosts did well to block Woking’s every effort, leaving the teams on level terms at the break.

Half-time: Wealdstone 1 – 1 Woking

The second half started in a similar fashion to how the first ended: with a dangerous Patterson free-kick. This time, his delivery into the box was met by Trickett’s run, with the forward attempting to direct the ball in at the back post. The Cards, however, were denied the perfect second-half start, with a 48th-minute save keeping the teams level.

Boxall, once again, almost netted from long range, this time in the 59th minute. The captain’s shot looked set to fall under the crossbar, but the ‘keeper, starting in the centre of his box, did well to shuffle back and tip the effort onto the woodwork. Trickett followed it in, but the loose ball was collected before the no.9 could tap home.

Leaving it late, the 80th minute saw Woking back ahead, courtesy of Dryer. The winger did brilliantly well to skip past the Wealdstone pressure in the box, and got an excellent effort away from a tight angle. Met by a strong glove, the shot looked initially to have been saved, but the awkward bounce of the ball saw it fall in at the back post, making it 15 National League Academy goals, between league and league cup, this season for Dryer.

As the game drew to a close, Trickett went close to sealing the win, with an 88th-minute effort taking an almost favourable deflection, but Wealdstone’s keeper was there to collect. Nevertheless, Woking maintained their lead, with the full-time whistle that shortly followed confirming all three points to be taken back to Surrey.

Woking: Mikey Verga, Josh Solecki, Bailey Cotton, Cameron McQueen (Malachy Mpoy 30’ (Jayden Smith 76’)), Chris Rangel, Kemall Wilson, Lucas Boxall ©, Quincy Patterson, Joden Trickett, Kooshan Hayati (Yousef Mezenner 86’), Tom Dryer. Unused substitutes: Freddie Greenstreet, Sam Saward (GK).

Goalscorers: Trickett (5’ pen), Dryer (80’)

Other News

Tom Dryer made his first League appearance for the Woking First Team in the 4 – 0 victory over Hartlepool United on 10th January. Coming on with the score at 3 – 0 after 82 minutes, Tom contributed excellently to Woking’s continued dominance, putting the Hartlepool defence under pressure with his aggressive running, helping to create the space that Boatswain had to score the fourth goal, and having a shot on target that unfortunately went straight at the defender a couple of yards off the line. Congratulations to both Tom and the Academy for this significant progression.
