Alex Cora Sends 6-Word Alex Bregman Message Amid Red Sox Pursuit
The Boston Red Sox have reportedly made Alex Bregman their top priority this offseason, but he remains unsigned.
Now into January, Bregman still has interest from multiple teams, but the Red Sox still seem like the favorite to sign him. On Saturday, Alex Cora sent a message on Bregman and his free agency.
“The ball is in his court,” Cora said, per The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey.
The Red Sox have reportedly made an “aggressive offer” to Bregman in hopes of keeping him in Boston. It is now on Bregman to accept the offer to continue looking for something better.
As for the Red Sox, it’s no surprise they want Bregman back. He played well, earning his first All-Star nod since 2019, last season, and was a tremendous leader for their team. Craig Breslow spoke highly of him at the winter meetings, and Cora echoed the sentiment on Saturday.
“Last year, he checked all of the boxes I knew he was going to check,” Cora said in a clip posted by Rob Bradford on X. “He checked some boxes that people did not know he was going to check. I just let him work last year. Obviously, I cannot talk about free agents very straightforwardly, black and white, but I like the player. We like the player. Let’s see what happens.”
Bregman proved he is still one of the best third basemen in baseball and is seeking a long-term deal. The Red Sox seem comfortable with the offer they made him. The Chicago Cubs are another team with reported interest in Bregman, but the Red Sox seem highly motivated to keep him around.
