Tottenham Hotspur confirmed team XI vs Aston Villa – double surprise return for Spurs

0 13

The Tottenham Hotspur starting line-up for the FA Cup third round tie against Aston Villa has been announced.

Thomas Frank’s attention now turns to the FA Cup as Spurs kick off their campaign in the third round this evening at home to Aston Villa.

Spurs come into this tie off the back of a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, handing the Cherries their first win after a 12-game barren spell without a victory.

Meanwhile, Villa arrive following a goalless draw with Crystal Palace, but they remain in far better form, having suffered just one defeat in their last five, in stark contrast to Spurs, who have one win in that same period.

Solanke and Udogie return for Tottenham

Rotation could be on the cards for both sides, but Frank’s squad has been severely hit by injuries, limiting the Dane’s options.

The big news for Tottenham is the return of striker Dominic Solanke and left-back Destiny Udogie, who are both named on the bench.

Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison all remain out, while Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur are the latest to join the injury list.

Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma also remain unavailable as they are on international duty, while Cristian Romero serves a one-match ban.

This is the Tottenham team which takes to the field at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening:

Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Spence, Danso, Van de Ven, Porro; Gray, Palhinha; Simons, Tel, Richarlison; Kolo Muani.

Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Bizot; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Tielemans; Buendia,

Spurs’ poor league form makes the FA Cup particularly important, offering a potential route to silverware and European qualification.

At present, Tottenham sit 14th in the league table, and if Frank is to ease some of the growing tension, avoiding defeat tonight in front of the home support is absolutely vital.

Last season showed the importance of a strong cup run for Spurs, as their Europa League triumph helped turn a disastrous campaign into a more positive one, and the same could yet be the case this term, but only if Tottenham remain in the cup competitions.

For those wondering how to watch Aston Villa vs Tottenham, the match is scheduled for a 17:45 GMT kick-off and will be televised live on BBC One, TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports 2, BBC iPlayer, TNT Sports 9, the BBC Sport website and discovery+.
