Immediate impact: Fletcher holds crunch talks with three Man United stars after Amorim’s sacking
Manchester United return to Premier League action against Burnley tonight.
It will be United’s first game since the sacking of Ruben Amorim from the managerial position.
Ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, interim head coach Darren Fletcher faced the media and offered insight into his first steps behind the scenes.
One of the key questions put to Fletcher was whether he had held private conversations with players in the 24 hours following Amorim’s departure.
The former midfielder confirmed that he wasted no time in opening dialogue, starting with captain Bruno Fernandes.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “I had a conversation with Bruno, and that’s important because he’s the captain and I wanted to speak to him, and actually I focused on some of the players I don’t know so well, so Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
“Senne Lammens I actually had a conversation with him not too long ago, but those two I focused on because I’ve not really got a relationship with them and I wanted to get to know them and I wanted them to get to know me. So the others, I know well.”
It represents a smart and measured start from Fletcher, who has prioritised building trust with players he has had limited interaction with.
While Fletcher has worked at United in multiple roles over recent years and already knows much of the squad, the summer signings present a different challenge.
Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens and Bryan Mbeumo all arrived in the summer of 2025, well after Fletcher shifted his focus to youth development.
Since the start of this season, Fletcher’s role as Under-18s head coach has naturally reduced his day-to-day involvement with the first team.
Talking to Bruno Fernandes is extremely important as he is the club captain and also the catalyst for this team.
Cunha is another pivotal player who is now taking his game to another level.
Sesko’s situation is more delicate, with the young striker battling a dip in confidence after failing to find the net in recent matches.
Fletcher’s reassurance could prove vital, particularly as Sesko’s all-round play and physical contribution have remained strong despite the goals drying up.
Allowing the 22-year-old time, patience and clarity may yet unlock the finishing touch United desperately need in the weeks ahead.
