Tottenham star is too expensive for Barcelona, but they want to copy £43m Spurs deal
Barcelona are desperate to pull off deals similar to one Tottenham Hotspur completed a few years ago, even if the real deal is too expensive.
Tottenham’s transfer acquisitions have been a bit hit and miss since Johan Lange took charge a couple of years ago.
While some have not quite hit the expected heights, the Lilywhites have also pulled off some sensational deals, the most impressive of which was the signing of Micky van de Ven.
The North Londoners signed the Dutchman for just £43m, and the centre-back is now worth much more, having evolved into one of the best defenders in Europe.
Barcelona want to follow Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven example
According to reports, Van de Ven is now wanted by the likes of Real Madrid, but it is expected to take around £100m to price him away from N17.
This is noted by a new report in Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), which says that the Netherlands international is too expensive for Barcelona at this stage.
However, the outlet states that Barca are looking at Tottenham’s signing of the 24-year-old from Wolfsburg as an example of the sort of deals they want to pull off.
The publication points out that the youngster moved from Volendam to Wolfsburg for around £3m in 2021, and sees that as evidence that there are world-class talents around Europe who are available for pennies.
Spurs should learn lessons from their past mistakes
There appears to be a general perception among the Tottenham fan base that the club need to pay £70m or above for world-class, game-changing signings, but that may not necessarily be the case.
Some of Spurs best signings over recent years, such as Van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Lucas Bergvall, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Sarr, did not cost a fortune.
On the other end, the players that Spurs spent £60m-plus on, such as Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele and Dominic Solanke, have not had the expected impact yet.
This proves that the quality of recruitment is much more important than simply spending big on players with a big reputation.
