Former Pro Bowl Quarterback Bashes Cam Newton For Drake Maye Hate
The New England Patriots finished off the 2025 regular season with a 38-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 18. And while he didn’t have to do much in this one, second-year quarterback Drake Maye may have put the finishing touches on an MVP campaign.
Maye suited up for all 17 games this season, throwing for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, while also rushing for 450 yards and four more scores. Thanks to his strong play on the field and humble demeanor off it, he has quickly become one of the most popular players in the league.
Like everyone in the NFL, though, Maye has his fair share of detractors, with perhaps the most vocal of the bunch being former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton. After his latest anti-Maye tirade, former Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III took aim at Newton for his continued disrespect of New England’s budding star.
“Drake Maye is a game changing franchise QB who is Top 2 in the MVP race and took the Patriots from 4-13 to 14-3,” Griffin said in a post on X. “THERE ISN’T ANYTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT HIM. Cam Newton finding ways to devalue him is unnecessary and sad for Drake Maye since Cam was one of his heroes growing up.”
For whatever reason, Newton has been bashing Maye all season long, despite his continued strong play on the field. With the regular season in the books, and Maye all but guaranteed a top-two finish in the MVP race, Griffin rightfully put Newton in his place.
The public discourse surrounding Maye hasn’t bothered him all season long, and chances are he won’t be too concerned about the latest chatter about him. Instead, Maye’s full focus will be on New England’s upcoming playoff matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
