Supercomputer predicts where Tottenham will finish in Champions League table after Slavia Prague win

0 0

Opta’s Supercomputer has revised its prediction on the final league phase table of the Champions League following Tottenham’s latest result.

Spurs made three wins in three at home in the Champions League this season as they brushed aside Slavia Prague 3-0 on Tuesday.

What will particularly please Thomas Frank is that the Lilywhites have not conceded a single goal in their three home games.

Tottenham are now just one point away from the top eight, which brings automatic qualification to the round of 16 stage, while finishing anywhere between 8th and 24th will involve an additional knockout round.

Opta predicts Tottenham will miss out a top-eight finish in the Champions League

What the Lilywhites have done with their latest win is almost guarantee themselves a top 24 finish and a place in the knockout stage of the competition.

That is borne out by Opta’s Supercomputer, which predicts that Spurs have a 74 per cent chance of making it into the next round.

However, the algorithm expects Tottenham to miss out on a top-eight finish, predicting that the Lilywhites will finish in 11th place with an expected 13.9 points.

Given the fixture congestion over the next few months, playing an additional two matches is something that Frank’s men would want to desperately avoid.

What Spurs need in their remaining two matches to secure a top-eight finish

In last season’s Champions League, 12 points were enough for clubs to finish in the top eight and secure direct passage to the final 16.

Tottenham are currently on 11 points after five matches, but 12 points will likely not be enough this season, as there is a logjam at the top end of the table.

Spurs need to win at least one of their two remaining matches to give themselves a fighting chance of getting into the top eight, while getting four points from the remaining matches will almost guarantee them a straight passage to the pre-quarterfinal.
