Red Sox Fans Won’t Like Latest Alex Bregman ‘Plan B’
Boston Red Sox fans rightfully assume that the club is going to do everything in its power to re-sign Alex Bregman this offseason … but what if that doesn’t happen?
Free agency can be difficult to predict, even in instances like this one where the Red Sox want Bregman back, and Boston is clearly the best fit for him.
A Bregman return feels very likely, but that didn’t stop Bleacher Report’s MLB writer Kerry Miller from penning a ‘Plan B’ for Boston in the event that Bregman signs elsewhere.
The thing about Miller’s backup plan is that it involves a pair of unproven players at the MLB level, which won’t make it an idea that makes many (or any) Red Sox fans smile.
“Plan B: Sign One of the Sluggers Coming Over from Japan,” Miller wrote on Sunday. “Whether it’s Munetaka Murakami or the less-heralded but also homer-happy Kazuma Okamoto, the Red Sox could adjust to life after Bregman via international waters.”
“The problem with that plan is that neither Japanese slugger is anything close to a sure thing on the defensive side of the hot corner equation,” Miller continued. “But considering they also have a need at first base, the Plan B to their Plan B could be moving Murakami/Okamoto across the diamond and hoping for the best with Marcelo Mayer at third.”
Miller then added a more palatable option:
“If they’re fine with that option, though, maybe the actual replacement for Bregman’s right-handed bat in the lineup is signing Pete Alonso to play first and just embracing the possibility that third base needs to be addressed at the trade deadline.”
How are we feeling, Red Sox fans?
