Amorim: You can feel the anxiety every time Dorgu touches the ball
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has given surprisingly frank comments about the performance of Patrick Dorgu for the club.
Having scored for Denmark during the international break, before skying one of our best chances against Everton over the bar, Amorim claims the player is full of anxiety when representing United.
Speaking to the press ahead of our game against Crystal Palace, Amorim has criticised the full-back. These comments happen to coincide with reports that Dorgu liked a post on social media mocking the manager.
I don’t know what is going to happen in January. What I feel, when I see them training, they are doing so much better than in games. Patrick, when I see him playing for the national team, he scored a great goal against Scotland. The decision he made under pressure was completely different to the decision he is making in our team. He needs to be calmer playing the game. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel the anxiety.
When asked specifically about the performance of all the full-backs, Amorim was again less than complimentary.
I think they are far from the best, and they know it. So, like a lot of players in our team, like myself. So I just, I just look at them, and I think they have so much more to give. So let’s see, let’s see this week if we improve that.
United lost to the 10 men of Everton in our last game and Amorim rightly came under criticism for remaining with so many defensive players on the pitch. Amorim reflected on that stance.
It depends on how you play. Some teams play with four centre-backs. I play with three, and one of them is Luke Shaw. Sometimes it’s Nous [Mazraoui] and Shaw, so just one centre-back. And when you have Amad as a wing-back, he’s a winger, not a wing-back. It depends on how you look at it. We’re too soft near the box. We conceded too many crosses against Nottingham. Against Everton, we conceded from their only shot on target. It changes how you look at it, but we obviously have to do better. It’s not a problem with the defenders, but with how we sense the danger.
