Dominant Avalanche On Pace To Shatter Bruins’ NHL Points Record

The Colorado Avalanche are a juggernaut. They’ve dominated the NHL this season, leading the league with a 16-1-5 record.

By comparison, every other team has at least five losses in regulation. Their only 60-minute loss came nearly a month ago in a road game against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 25.

That upset came in the middle of a four-game losing streak for the Avalanche. Since that skid, they’ve won 11 of their last 12 games, including their last nine in a row.

Colorado’s already up to 37 points through 22 games, putting the team on pace to finish with 138 points. That would shatter the NHL single-season record of 135 points set by the 2022-23 Bruins.

“They’re looking like that Bruins team that broke the record for points,” Ryan Whitney said on Monday’s episode of Spittin’ Chiclets. “This Colorado team is heads and shoulders above everyone else…They’re drumming everyone.”

The Avalanche have been borderline unstoppable. They lead the NHL in goals scored (88), goals allowed (48) and goal differential (plus-40). Nathan MacKinnon is the frontrunner for the Hart Trophy, leading the league in goals (17), points (37) and plus/minus (plus-23).

With Cale Makar, Martin Necas, Artturi Lehkonen and others, Colorado’s roster is absolutely stacked. Scott Wedgewood is a Vezina candidate, allowing just 2.09 goals per game and leading the league with 13 wins.

It’s still early, however, so it will be interesting if the Avalanche can stay healthy and maintan this pace. They’re only about a quarter of the way through the season, so the playoffs are still a long way away.

Boston’s record-setting team was knocked out in the first round by the Florida Panthers, so time will tell if Colorado can avoid a similar fate and make a serious run at the Stanley Cup.
