Alex Bregman-Pete Alonso Red Sox Question Answered By Insider
With the Boston Red Sox trading for Sonny Gray on Tuesday, fans are wondering what’s next for the Sox. Many assume that Boston’s No. 1 priority should be working out a deal to re-sign third baseman Alex Bregman.
Another righty bat that has been incessantly linked to Boston this offseason is free agent Pete Alonso, who is the all-time home runs leader in the New York Mets’ organization.
Alonso’s swing would fit perfectly with the Green Monster, and some fans are thirsting for both Alonso and Bregman to end up in Red Sox uniforms before Opening Day 2026.
But if Boston could only end up with one of these two All-Stars, who would be the better fit? This is a question that was posed to The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday during a new episode of Foul Territory.
Rosenthal asserted that Bregman is the better fit of the two for the Red Sox.
“Bregman is a difference-maker in so many ways,” Rosenthal said.
“Obviously, the bat, that’s one thing. The defense is really good, that’s another thing; and also, the intangibles that he brings to a team. … He helps other players improve. He makes suggestions, even to pitchers, and he is a total difference-maker in the clubhouse.”
“He’s a better fit than Alonso for me,” Rosenthal continued. “One, because of the defensive ability. Two, because you have Triston Casas. First base is an easier position to fill long-term if Casas is not the answer. So while Alonso would be a good fit as well if they lost Bregman, Bregman to me … is (still) the guy that they should be targeting first and foremost, and I expect that they will.”
Bregman hit .273 (.821 OPS) with 18 homers, 62 RBI and 64 runs scored in 114 games in 2025 for Boston. He missed significant time during the middle of the season due to a quad injury.
