"Of course": Amorim says "smart" Man Utd star could play at Lwb after Dorgu and Dalot
Manchester United entertain Everton in Monday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
Ahead of the game, manager Ruben Amorim was posed with plenty of questions by reporters.
One of those was focused on whether Luke Shaw can play as a left wing-back for the Red Devils.
Amorim has stuck with either Patrick Dorgu or Diogo Dalot in the position this season.
The Portuguese tactician has yet to experiment with a new option, but acknowledged that Shaw is a ‘smart’ player. He is another solution, having overcome his previous injury troubles.
Amorim said: “He can play left wing-back but of course the load that a player does in that position is a little different if you are doing that on a daily basis.
“He is more prepared to do that position but of course he can play there, he is a smart player and he is fit in the moment so I think he is an option.”
Shaw has become a permanent figure in the left centre-back position for United this term. The Englishman has benefitted from the prolonged injury absence of Lisandro Martinez.
He has capitalised on Martinez’s setback to become an undisputed starter. However, things could change as the World Cup winner is anticipated to return to the starting line-up at some point.
Martinez has been working on the training pitch for a number of weeks after his long-term knee injury. The Argentine could make his first start of the campaign for the club next month.
This could pave the way for Shaw to feature in a slightly attacking role at left wing-back.
The 30-year-old was one of the best left-backs in the country between 2021 and 2023, but has since been mainly out of the national team picture due to his inability to stay unscathed.
As a left wing-back, he would be an upgrade on Dorgu and Dalot. Shaw would provide the right balance in attack and defence for the Red Devils during the back end of the season.
