Queen's Park 4 Partick Thistle 0 - Spiders Under-19s Stay Unbeaten
TWO unbeaten records were on the line when Queen’s Park hosted Partick Thistle at Lochinch – second against first in the CAS Under-19s Advanced Youth League.
The Young Spiders prevailed 4-0 and moved four points clear of their city rivals thanks to a Josiah Sowa double, Cole Goldie header and a second-half free-kick.
Charley King has now warned his teenage team they must match the standards set in the top of the table clash – as more teams will have eyes on ending their unbeaten run.
The Jags had won all seven games of their campaign so far, with Queen’s Park winning the same amount plus a draw against Livingston last month.
But immediately they took control of this home match – an instruction emphasised throughout the build-up by coach King.
It took until the half hour though for the deadlock to be broken – and when it was there were three goals inside 15 minutes.
Connor Falls’ through-ball fell nicely into the path of Sam McLachlan. The attacker tested the Thistle goalkeeper but Cole Goldie knocked in the headed rebound.
It was 2-0 immediately after it – a really good move from the right saw Timam Scott put the ball across for Josiah Sowa coming in at the backpost. It was another move worked on the training pitch and pleased the Spiders coaches.
By the break they were delighted as Sowa ran clear after a flowing move up the left and stroked in the third one-on-one.
It had been a confident first half, but not completely dominated with Thistle forcing Archie Aitchison into some important saves.
They continued in the second half with one in particular on the hour stalling the Jags’ momentum that had gradually built since the restart.
To that point the Jags had had a foothold in the second half but Queen’s Park found their fourth through a trialist free-kick that completed the scoring and put the game beyond doubt.
Charley King said: “We knew it would be a good game and emphasised during the week we wanted to start quickly
and take control of the game. We managed to do that early on we had a bit of the ball without creating much.
“It was good to see Archie making some of his first half saves because he’s just back in the team after a long-term injury. I was really happy for him to make those saves.
“That save from Archie in the second half was key at an important time.
“It was a strong performance overall, and we knew it would be a tough one.
“It’s up to us to maintain our standard now and stay unbeaten in the league because a lot of teams will come for us. We will need to keep the levels high and match the standards we have set.”
