Man United Women beat PSG in historic Women's Champions League clash

0 1

Manchester United Women marked their first-ever UEFA Women’s Champions League match at Old Trafford with a victory, beating Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 on Wednesday evening.

PSG started the game on the front foot and nearly took the lead inside two minutes when Jennifer Echeginni’s effort crashed off the post.

The French side dominated possession early on but could not threaten Safia Middleton-Patel in United’s goal.

The Red Devils eventually grew into the game and opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark.

Jayde Riviere whipped a long ball towards Melvine Malard who outmuscled her marker, cut in before unleashing a low shot into the net.

United failed to capitalise on the momentum, allowing PSG to push for the equaliser, which eventually came their way deep into the first half stoppage time.

Olda Carmona picked up possession from 25 yards out and rifled an unbelievable shot into the far top corner.

United regained their lead in the 57th minute as Jess Park did brilliantly to set up Anna Sandberg, who delivered a perfect cross for Fridolina Rolfo to head home.

Moments later, Mary Earps produced a good save to prevent Malard from giving the hosts a two-goal cushion.

Park then saw a shot blocked and Simi Awujo could only fire the rebound straight at Earps.

Three minutes from time, Tara Elimbi Gilbert looked set to restore parity for PSG, only to be denied by Riviere’s brilliant tackle.

United saw out the rest of the game with ease, maintaining their perfect start to the Women’s Champions League, with three wins from three.

Marc Skinner’s side are back in action on Saturday afternoon at rivals Manchester City, aiming to return to winning ways in the Women’s Super League.
