MLB Rumors: Former Red Sox Reliever Pumps Brakes On Front Office Buzz
Not so fast, my friends. Former Boston Red Sox reliever Adam Ottavino is pumping the brakes on rumors which have him joining the Colorado Rockies’ front office.
“Source: Adam Ottavino has spoken with Rockies owner Dick Monfort about the team’s head of baseball operations opening,” the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey reported Monday. “Ottavino, a Northeastern alum who turns 40 this month, pitched in the majors as recently as April with the Yankees. He spent 2012-18 with the Rockies.”
Front Office Fit?
That report was confirmed by the New York Post’s Joel Sherman.
“Adam Ottavino, who pitched early in the 2025 season for the Yankees, did indeed speak to Rockies owner Dick Monfort about being head of baseball operations as @timbhealey 1st reported. The conversation was 2 weeks ago. The two have stayed in touch,” Sherman posted on X.
“Running a baseball ops dept or managing has been a goal of Ottavino. Among the reasons he played Winter Ball in the D.R. after the 2024 season was prep for post career — to improve his Spanish skills and better understand such a vital feeder system to MLB,” Sherman added.
Thanks, But No Thanks?
However Ottavino reportedly gave a comment to the blog IamTrevorMay.com in the form of a text message.
“The Rockies thing is fun but probably not going anywhere,” Ottavino said.
Former big-league pitcher Trevor May helps run the blog. He was Ottavino’s teammate in 2022 with the New York Mets. May had nothing but nice things to say in his blog about Ottavino.
“He’s not afraid to think outside the box and he has a very scientific way of breaking things down and making things simple,” May said. “He is infinitely curious and is not afraid to try things. I think that’s what the Rockies need, they need to shake things up a bit, but they could finally get a guy who thinks differently but is still part of the family.”
Ottavino, 39, went to spring training thsis year with the Red Sox, but didn’t make the Opening Day roster. After opting out of his minor-league deal with Boston, Ottavino signed with the New York Yankees.
The right-hander made three appearances for the Yankees during the 2025 season, throwing 1.2 innings of shutout ball.
Ottavino spent the 2021 season in Boston, going 7-3 with 11 saves and a 4.21 ERA and helping the Red Sox reach the American League Championship Series.
